THE ENGLISH QABALLA IN THEORY AND PRACTICE
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ENGLISH QABALLA
‘‘Thou shalt obtain the order & value of the English Alphabet; thou shalt find new symbols to attribute them unto.’’ (AL II:55). This prophecy was fulfilled twenty-nine years after Crowley’s death, when the English Qaballa was discovered by an English magickian. He obeyed the injunction in AL I:54 to ‘‘change not as much as the style of a letter;’’ and leaving A with the numerical value 1, proceeded to count off every eleventh letter of the English alphabet. This gave the Qaballistic Key to the Book of the Law as predicted within its text. The magickal order and value of the alphabet is as follows: A=1, L=2, W=3, H=4, S=5, D=6, O=7, Z=8, K=9, V=10, G=11, R=12, C=13, N=14, Y=15, J=16, U=17, F=18, Q=19, B=20, M=21, X=22, I=23, T=24, E=25, P=26; which Crowley and Achad approached but never achieved.
The date of the discovery, 26/11/76, is significant. The twenty-sixth day for the 26 letters and the eleventh month for the Key number 11, and the seventy-sixth year for the verse in the second chapter of AL from which the Key was obtained, 76. Moreover the chapter and verse numerals 2:76 may be written II/76 which also means November 1976. The importance of this verse is explained later in Chapter 2. The English Qaballa forms a unicursal star when the common alphabet is written around a circle (fig.1). The order of the English Qaballa when written around a circle again reveals the common alphabet in a counter-clockwise direction, counting every seventh letter (fig.2). The unicursal star, the continuous line, is connected with the symbol of the Snake holding its tail in its mouth.

Following the discovery of the Key, instructions given in the text for its calculation became clear. In AL III:47 it is stated that ‘‘this book shall be translated into all tongues: but always with the original in the writing of the Beast; for in the chance shape of the letters and their position to one another: in these are mysteries that no Beast shall divine.’’ In the original manuscript the remainder of the verse is written over a grid with an oblique line drawn across it and a rose cross symbol near the end of the line. There are letters written along the top of the grid and numbers down the left hand side; and herein lies the secret, for one should write the alphabet vertically upon the grid, repeating it when one gets to Z, and then read the order of the Qaballa along the diagonal line: ‘‘This line drawn is a key....and Abrahadabra.’’ Abrahadabra is a word of 11 letters, another pointer towards the Key. Below are the statements made in AL concerning the key to the Qaballa followed by our hindsighted interpretations. We must stress that the Qaballa was obtained without any recourse to this type of logical process.
(I:36) ‘‘My scribe Ankh-af-na-Khonsu, the priest of the princes, shall not in one letter change this book.’’ This statement is taken literally: that one letter only must not be changed. But what letter?
(I:54) ‘‘Change not as much as the style of a letter.’’ This leads us to believe that the letter mentioned in I:36 is A. The rest then must be changed, but how?
(I:60) ‘‘My number is 11, as all their numbers who are of us.’’ Of them? All their words must be ‘of them’ and as they are Gods their words must be living words that somehow obey the number 11.
(II:16) ‘‘Thus eleven, as my bride is eleven.’’ A reiteration of the above statement.
(II:54-55) ‘‘The stops as thou wilt; the letters? change them not in style or value....Thou shalt obtain the order and value of the English Alphabet.’’ The first phrase ‘‘The stops as thou wilt’’ indicates that one can read the verses right through, ignoring punctuation. A further emphasis on the number, there are eleven words in the last phrase. To summarise the whole procedure, the letter A must not be changed in style or value while all the rest are to be changed by the number eleven.
INITIATION BY THE BOOK
Liber AL is not a derivative work. No man could have written it - the English Qaballa proves this beyond any doubt. It was composed by the same power that has controlled the development and form of several languages to culminate in English as it was known in 1904, a power which has perpetuated its message from aeon to aeon, bridging the gap between planes to communicate a unique perfect cipher which conceals and reveals the natures of man, the universe, and the magick of the aeon, and functions on all qaballistic levels. Nothing like it has ever appeared on Earth before.
Liber AL is an initiatory text, and the first test is in the first reading. Then the reader will always find a proposition that will challenge him in some intimate way, when he will either discard it or find his curiosity aroused. It is no ordinary dead-letter text, it is not possible to judge it; it is alive, and it creates a dialogue with the student. It sets to work rather like a computer program to find out if he or she is worthy to understand any of its mysteries. The correspondences of the English Qaballa, the text of AL, the symbols and the numbers, infuse themselves into the conscious and unconscious mind, and the teaching is not in the words but in one’s reactions to them. It may begin by
testing one’s moral integrity, presenting a proposition which seems untenable, or it may have a go at one’s religious sensibilities or attack one’s principles. Basic honesty is tested again and again to see if the student will try to bend the numbers to fit an idea, or attempt to twist an uneasy concept into something more palatable. There are times when one discards the work in disgust, only to be lured back into the drama by apparent coincidences. There are times when AL’s undoubted divine sense of humour turns up the same number repeatedly with guffaws of hilarity all round, and there are occasions when a string of ideas suddenly line up together in one’s mind like the wheels in a one-armed bandit and one wins the jackpot of sublime enlightenment and ecstasy.The dedicated student will find his life altered by unseen hands. Liber AL will interact with every part of his being, it interrupts the working of the Soul sometimes with subtlety, sometimes with a savagery that he will barely withstand, creating the ordeals necessary for him to understand the secrets concealed within its text. Failure is an indication of the system highlighting an aspect of the student’s psyche that he cannot cope with. During the Ordeal X one becomes obsessed with one’s greatest weakness to the point of madness and beyond; to survive one must recognise this phenomenon and deal with it. The way in which ones does so defines whether one passes that part of the Ordeal or not. The phenomenon is associated with Scorpio. The individual concerned seems perfectly normal and then unexpectedly changes and behaves totally irrationally and with great hostility. Friends become enemies filled with loathing and hatred. This happened within Crowley’s organisation and in every Thelemic organisation since Crowley. There is the initial unity of purpose within the group and then the whole thing explodes, individuals who were once honourable become scoundrels, the meek become mad dogs, people start behaving in a way conducive only to their estrangement from the group of which they are members. That this force is 93 there is no question. The result to any Thelemic organisation is ruinous: and there seems little hope of success for any Thelemic group until this force is understood and dealt with. It is often forgotten that Nuit is the goddess who teaches discrimination, and this virtue is a most necessary one in working with Liber AL and its Qaballa.
THE BOOK AND ITS QABALLA
A serious study of Liber AL and its Qaballa requires a knowledge of traditional Hebrew Qabalah; classical mythology; astrology; and familiarity at least with the whole spectrum of occult literature and practice. The student will need an open mind and will certainly develop one with persistent E.Q. working. The Book of the Law is no ordinary text to be read, evaluated, and accepted or discarded. It is, for instance, unwise to assume that the subject of a sentence will remain the same all the way through. Ideas appear to be sequential but more often than not they are fragmented. For example, ‘‘Compassion is the vice of kings,’’ (AL II:21) would seem to suggest that compassion is a negative quality until we read later that ‘‘these vices are my service,’’ (II:52). The value of VICE is 71=VENUS. Venus governs the emotions. MY=36=MAN and SUN. Therefore these two phrases may be read ‘‘compassion is the emotional response of kings’’ and ‘‘compassionate emotional responses are in the service of the Sun or Man.’’ On a superficial level Liber AL seems to make sense, albeit outrageous sense at times, but the reality is in its Qaballa. To take another example, ‘Help me, o warrior lord of Thebes, in my unveiling before the Children of men!’’ (AL I:5) by English Qaballa reads thus: ‘‘Help Woman in the Sun’s (or Man’s) unveiling before the children of men,’’ ME having the same value as WOMAN, 46. A deeper interpretation would be ‘‘Ra Hoor Khut must help Woman to partake of the mystery of the Sun at the time of its conjunction with Venus,’’ since WARRIOR LORD = 97 = RA HOOR KHUT, and BEFORE=107= SUN+VENUS. Liber AL is full of ugly traps and pitfalls for the uninitiated. It is not an instruction book nor does it give a law in any ordinary sense, but it will give the ignorant an excuse for their ignorance and the cruel justification for their cruelty. The road to Thelema is littered with the corpses of opportunists with elephantine egos and microscopic souls.
The methods set forth in this chapter have been developed and rigorously tested over some fifteen years. The correspondences have been deliberately chosen and kept to a minimum so that they may act as signposts rather than maps, illustrating the validity of the system while leaving the student to use his or her own judgment in accordance with the Comment, ‘‘All questions of the Law are to be decided only by appeal to my writings, each for himself.’’ In the English Qaballa the number is the primary symbol; consequently the Qaballistic interpretation of a phrase or sentence is always derived firstly from the numerical values concerned, and the conventional meaning and implication of the words is considered in that light. This will be illustrated with an explanation of the number 1, and two-digit numbers containing 1.
A STUDY OF THE NUMBER 1 ACCORDING TO THE ENGLISH QABALLA
ONE has the same value as WOMAN, 46. It is therefore the number of the archetypal Woman, who is the manifested form of the Goddess. She is the ONE who is ‘‘divided for love’s sake, for the chance of union.‘‘(AL I:29). This is one of the Keys to the Mysteries of AL, which are the mysteries that preceded the Rites of Isis in the forgotten heritage of mankind. Numbers with two digits where the second is 1 signify a Woman with the nature of the first number - thus, 71 is the Woman whose nature is, as the number 7, sacred to the Goddess, i.e. VENUS=71 by E.Q.
1). The first word of Liber AL, HAD, has the value 11, signifying the dual Goddess in the division for love’s sake referred to above. The essential meaning of the first word of the Book of the Law, ‘‘Had! the manifestation of Nuit,’’ is equivalent to the Biblical expression of the moment of creation, ‘‘Let there be light!’’ The duality is that of Kether, deity beholding deity as in a mirror, and the symbolism of the Sacred Countenance whose left side is turned ever towards the perfection of Heaven.
2). The next number to consider is 21. TWO has the value of LEO, 34, and SHE. This number refers to the Woman leading the Lion illustrated in the Tarot card Strength. Tradition has it that this card represents Mary Magdalene and the Lion of Judea. 21 is the value of the letter M in E.Q. - a letter of great significance to occult lodges as the initial of the Magdalene.
3). 31 is the value of NU. Chapter 2 of Liber AL begins with the statement ‘‘Nu!
the hiding of Hadit.’’ Hadit may be thought of as the infinitely tiny
particle which cannot be seen; it is smaller than any wave-form known to
physics. A wave-form must always be used to view another wave-form, or
interference in space, i.e., matter, light, and so on. Nu is the wave-form which
conceals Hadit, as is signified by the shape of the letters
. Physics has shown that upon manifestation a
particle explores space and time backwards and forwards, an event symbolised by
the number 58, (=HADIT), for 5=S whose shape is the archetypal wave-form of the
Snake, in infinity as expressed by the number 8. It is said in AL II:4 that ‘‘she
shall be known and I never.’’ Wave-forms are known but the ultimate
disturbance in space that is responsible for manifestation can never be known in
the Gnostic sense. The Woman of Nu is the One who partakes of and conceals the
Trinity of Heaven.
4). The next Woman to consider is signified by the number 41, she who expresses all phenomena dependent on the number 4; the elements, quarters, seasons, and so on. The number four refers to the Cross and has the same value as SNAKE, 54; the four gives us the continuous cycle of birth, life, reproduction, and death. Misinterpretation of this fourfold cycle of Nature has given rise to a false idea of sacrifice, seemingly indicated by the plant dying that the seeds may live. The idea that the death of the plant is necessary for the gathering of the harvest is resonated hideously by the suffering sacrificed god of Christianity. Jesus never dies. He is not identical with the plant, but with the Spirit of Life that creates both plant and seed. The fourfold cycle of eternal life is that of the Woman who expresses that nature, symbolised by the number 41. 41 is the value of HER; and is the sum of the upper four spheres upon the Trunk of the Complete Tree of Life (see chapter 2); 4 is the first number of AL II:76, and the value of the first letter of the first word of AL. Thus we see that the source of the Woman signified by 41 is well and truly in the unmanifest, concealed by the light of the Sun. Incidentally, the whole of the unmanifest is concealed by the light of the Sun: this is the meaning of Christ’s words ‘‘No-one can come to the Father except by me,’’ i.e., the way to Heaven is via Tiphareth, the sphere of Shemesh, the Sun.
5). With the number 51 we meet the Woman of the pentagram. 51 is the value of ONES, i.e., WOMAN + S=5. As we have already noted, the number 5 indicates the snake; THE SNAKE = 107 = SUN+VENUS. The pentagram is drawn in the heavens once every eight years by the conjunctions of the Sun and Venus (see chapter 3). The Woman of the Snake is she who has the task of adjusting and purifying humanity, for she is the Kundalini Serpent who ascends the body of man to unite with herself in the highest Chakra. She can be described as that continuous state of change which is the Universe (=131=SERPENT); 51 is the value of SORROWS which she appears to provoke.
6). 61 signifies the Woman who embodies the universal Law of
Love. LAW=6, the number symbolising the erect Kundalini serpent united with its
source in heaven. This Woman is the expression of the division for love’s sake,
the secret and most sacred Name (NAME=61) that conceals the law of creation. In
the Hebrew Qabalah 61 is the value of
![]()
![]()
or Nothing, the ‘‘secret Key of this law,’’ (AL I:46); it is this law of
reunion through love of the divided unity which is at the centre of the Creation
as concealed and revealed in the Book of the Law.
7). 71 is the value of VENUS, the Great Goddess expressed in Woman; whose planet bestows all the qualities of beauty; whose love is eternal. HEARTS has the value 71: all hearts express love, regardless of whether or no the individual so names his passion, for the man who hates violence loves peace, and he who loves justice abhors injustice; this is why both love and hate cause the same warm glow in the heart. It is wise to understand this when looking at words such as ‘hate’ in Liber AL.
8). 81 symbolises the eternal Woman whose word is the Truth concealed within the Stele of Revealing. Both TRUTH and STELE have the value 81. 8 is the infinity of nothing as AL I:46 states: ‘‘Nothing is a secret key....I call it eight, eighty, four hundred & eighteen.’’ In AL III:21 it is written ‘‘Set up my image in the east.’’ IMAGE=81; MY has the same value as SUN, 36. The phrase refers to the ultimate ideal image of Woman that can be expressed by man, the most beautiful and illuminating Woman Clothed with the Sun. MY IMAGE has the value 117, the same as that of Kether on the Tree of Manifestation, whose dual nature is expressed by GEMINI=117 (see chapter 2).
9). 91 is the value of HERSELF and refers to the illusion with which the Woman conceals her true nature. A woman is positive on the unconscious level and negative on the conscious level - she has no ‘self’ in the way that a man, consciously positive, has a ‘self’. This Woman creates the illusion of the eternal fresh beauty of Spring (SPRING=91) reflected in the feminine desire for eternally youthful beauty. Yet this glamorous female by giving an illusory image of herself may provoke dishonesty and therefore be seen as an outcast (OUTCAST=91).
10). With the number 101 we reach the last of the simple concepts of the nature of the archetypal Woman. Numbers preceded by a 1, i.e., 12, 13, 14, etc, represent the Woman manifesting the power of the subsequent number from within herself, as opposed to the idea of that force acting through the Woman as described above. 101 is the value of ELEVEN and expresses the mystery of the first beginning; symbolising as it does the Goddess, Woman+Woman, divided for love’s sake by the infinity of nothing, Zero. The division is MISERY (=101), and yet it is DIVINE (=101).
Where a digit has a 1 either side of it, as in 111, 121, 131, etc, it forms a glyph of two pillars divided by this digit, indicating a power acting in balanced manifestation: thus 121 is balanced duality as expressed in CAPRICORN, DELICIOUS, RAPTUROUS, REJOICE, which all add up to 121. With 131 we find AL in balanced manifestation in words such as UNIVERSE, SUPREME, SERPENT. 141 is the balance of the four elements in the words ELEMENTS, CONTINUOUS, and BEAUTEOUS. The number 151 represents the equilibrium of the energy of Mars with CERTAINTY, EIGHTEEN, and LIGHTENING. 161 is the Law in balanced manifestation: REMEMBER, REVERENCE, and SWEETNESSES. There is no 171 in Liber AL as 7 is the root number of Our Lady of the Stars, and 7=O being the infinite zero cannot be expressed. The number 181 is expressed in the word UNUTTERABLE and since we have three forms of Nothing in eight, eighty, and four hundred & eighteen, balanced zero cannot be borne, and hence 181 represents a word that cannot be spoken. There is no single word in Liber AL which adds to 191. 9 is the number of Yesod, the sphere of illusion. Illusion cannot be in balanced manifestation: if it were it would not be illusion.
EIGHT METHODS OF APPLYING THE ENGLISH QABALLA
To demonstrate the methods of our Qaballa we will use the name JESUS which is known and approachable by all.
1).The first method of Qaballa is simply counting the value of a name, phrase, sentence, etc, and comparing with others of the same value. Remember that the numbers are the primary idea rather than the names or concepts that they resonate. JESUS=68. In E.Q. 6=LAW and 8=0 or infinite zero. Therefore we may say that 68 is Infinite Law, and Jesus is a resonance or expression of this Law. JESUS=68=LIFE, and CHANGE. It is certainly true that the infinite law is Life and Change. The infinite law of life is change, nothing remains the same. The life of Jesus illustrates to the initiate how life and change proceed. Jesus led a life of sacrifice illustrating that to move forward in time something must be sacrificed. To change one form of energy to another, some of that original energy must be sacrificed in the change.
Change is the formula of life but its mechanisms are not uniform or indeed logical, proceeding according to the 93 formula of unity by denial or division by affirmation. Thus what may be impossible logically must exist by necessity. A bird has feathers because it should not have them. It is impossible that an evolutionary system could sustain such an event as giving a creature feathers, but for the joy of life it is necessary that it be so. This is how life (=68) proceeds, anything that cannot happen normally, that is impossibly outlandish or ludicrous, must happen in 93.
2). The second method of our Qaballa is one in which the first letters of each word in a phrase or sentence are added together. This shows how the process indicated by the sentence will begin, just as adding the last letters of each word of a sentence will tell you how the expression will end. The sentence will express what will occur between the beginning and the end. To remain within our guidelines we must find a sentence whose initials add to 68. ‘‘This shall regenerate the world,’’ (AL I:53) T+S+R+T+W = 24+5+12+24+3 = 68. The beginning of the regeneration of the world will be with Jesus. The world will finally be regenerated by the sum of the last letters of each word which is S+L+E+E+D = 5+2+25+25+6 = 63 = VIRGO. The regeneration of the world will be completed by the Virgin Mother of Christ who in her deepest mystical sense is the great Goddess Nuit.
To further illustrate this method consider the phrase in AL II:15, ‘‘For I am perfect.’’ F I A P = 68 = JESUS. PERFECT=143=JUPITER. Jesus begins the cycle of perfection. The idea of perfection is implicit in the benefic planet Jupiter. How will this perfection end and what will it evolve into? Again we use the last letters of the phrase, R I M T = 80 which is infinite Nothing. This is an affirmation of the formula of creation given in AL II:76. Using this method of Qaballa one can divine many of the secrets of the mysteries.
3). A third method of Qaballa involves reversing the number to find the reward of that number. This method is revealed in the first verse of AL III, ‘‘Abrahadabra! The reward of Ra Hoor Khut.’’ ABRAHADABRA=79, RA HOOR KHUT=97. 97 is the reverse of 79. The reward of Jesus (=68) is 86. Some of the simpler words having the value 86 are MERCY THRONE CREEDS COURAGE IMAGES TREES. These are all ideas implicit in Christianity and need no further elucidation.
4). The context of the word sheds light on the meaning of that word. The only place that Jesus is mentioned in AL is in III:51, ‘‘I peck at the eyes of Jesus as he hangs upon the cross.’’ Note that the present tense of the word ‘hangs’ means that he still hangs on the cross. This is quite precise, Jesus hangs on the cross throughout all eternity, and throughout eternity the pseudo self ‘I’ who is Horus the Hawk God tries to blind Jesus. PECK=73=POWER, so the phrase may be read as ‘‘I power the eyes of Jesus.’’ How can these two ideas be reconciled? It is only by resistance that any phenomena can occur. If there is no resistance then a phenomenon will pass straight through that state until it meets one. In this case Horus pecking the Eyes of Jesus means that Horus is the resistance to Jesus and there is no grace or guilt implicit in this statement, it is a simple fact. It is an illustration of one of the laws of nature. THE EYES OF JESUS = 216 = VENUS + NEPTUNE: ‘‘I peck at Venus-Neptune.’’ The planet Neptune is the planet of the mystic, Venus the planet of Love. The Eyes of Jesus are the eyes of the mystic in the sense that any mystic must, if he is to be successful, look at life with the Eyes of Jesus, and those eyes are synonymous with the influence of Venus-Neptune. This means that Horus is the enemy of the mystic. This is hardly surprising because Horus is the God of action, not for him the gentle eyes of Jesus. The Avenging Horus, crimson in his glory, does the will of his mother Isis-Scorpio whereas Jesus does the gentle will of his mother Mary.
5). ‘‘Counting well’’ is another method derived from the third chapter, involving two words. The value of the first word is multiplied by the number of letters in the second word, and the value of the second word multiplied by the number of letters in the first, and the two totals then added together. JESUS=68 CHRIST=81 68 x 6 = 408: 81 x 5 = 405: 408 + 405 = 813. This is the sum total of all the planets by E.Q., which shows that all the planetary influences are harmonised by the power of Jesus Christ.
6). The letters of the alphabet each have an individual meaning; when these individual meanings are expressed in a word, the true meaning of the word is revealed.
J=16=WAR
JE=41=HER
JES=46=WOMAN
JESU=63=VIRGO. The nature of Jesus is essentially that of his Mother. He is a God whose power is feminine. WAR in this case means the breakdown and destruction of the old status quo.
7). The Word of an archetype may be found by adding 34 to its value. This method was derived from AL I:39 ‘‘The word of the Law is Qelhma.’’ THE LAW = 59 therefore the word of the law is 59 + 34 = 93 = Qelhma. The Word of Jesus is 68 + 34 = 102 = BEAUTY, KNOWLEDGE.
8). To find out the nature of what unites and divides one idea from another simply subtract the smaller value from the greater. How must man aspire to Jesus? MAN=36 therefore that which is between man and Jesus is 68 - 36 = 32 = DOOR, and KAABA. These two words suggest many interesting ideas. 32 is 23 reversed; 23 = I, indicating that the self’s identity must be turned on its head, which is in accordance with Christian mystical tradition.
FURTHER DEMONSTRATIONS OF THE ENGLISH QABALLA
We have said that the construction of a word is dependent upon the values of each letter for the inner meaning of that word. The result of applying this method is that the word means exactly what it usually means in English but is emphasised in a curious way. For example, the word God is composed of GO=18 and D=6. 6 is the value of LAW and 18 signifies one to infinity in action or GOing; thus the word God really means the infinite activity of the Law, or, more simply, Law in Action. This method of synthesising the attributes of a word is demonstrated below, using the words HADIT and NUIT.
H=4: the elements, Tetragrammaton, etc.
HA=5: S, the root of matter, the wave-form, the smallest particle of matter.
HAD=11: two negatively polarized forces. HA=5 and D=6, and thus we have the Law of the Pentagram.
HADI=34: the value of LEO and FOOL; energy, the will to be.
HADIT=58: the value of LIBRA, the balance. HADIT is the root of matter, having as its essential nature the law of the pentagram, and its substance partaking of the Fool and Leo: the balanced but implacable Will to Be.
N=14: the root letter of Death (n).
NU=31: the value of SOUL and WORK; the activity of the wave-form.
NUI=54: the value of SNAKE.
NUIT=78: the value of FIRE; the Goddess Infinite. This is a most apt description of division for love’s sake: NUI=54=SNAKE plus T=24=GOD. Nuit manifests in man as the love of God; this is ‘‘my name’’ known to man.
The name Babalon is traditionally interpreted as ‘‘The Woman Clothed with the Sun’’ but what does the name mean in E.Q.?
B=20: the root number of manifestation (=200).
BA=21=M: the initial of Mary Magdalene, etc.
BAB=41=WHOLE, HER: complete femininity.
BABA=42=STAR, BLOOD, CROSS, KISS: mysteries of female physiology.
BABAL=44=LOVE, FOLLY: attributes of her worship.
BABALO=51=ONES: ONE or WOMAN with the attributes of S=5 the root of Mars.
BABALON=65=WATER, WINE, WISDOM. She is the Woman of the Star whose nature is the power of the supreme Goddess. She is complete, She is the wisdom and the strength and the courage of woman. This interpretation is somewhat more comprehensive than the traditional interpretation.
BAPHOMET is another entity of whose nature much has been written but little understood.
B=20: root of manifestation.
BA=21=M: of the nature of the great M.
BAP=47=EGG, GLORY, STARS: life before birth.
BAPH=51=ADORE, ISLAND, ONES: individuality divided.
BAPHO=58=HADIT, LIBRA, HOUSE: the infinitely tiny particle in dynamic balance.
BAPHOM=79=ABRAHADABRA: the Word of Creation.
BAPHOME=104=SECRET, WONDERFUL, HOOR PA KRAAT: the Silent One.
BAPHOMET=128=RIGHTEOUS, WICKEDNESS: infinite unity/duality; the Word of Woman; the everlasting Zodiac. Baphomet is the Egg in perfect balance, the unborn secret whose nature is symbolised by the number 79. The Egg can contain anything, it is a symbol of life in the making, the mystery. Baphomet is symbolised with all the attributes of nature. The Egg has all the attributes of nature, it is Life in potential, ready to be born and is at once secret and apart as the divine will to go.
Finally, MAGICK is a much-used word that nobody, we suspect, knows the meaning of:
M=21: the Goddess in her three forms 3x7=21.
MA=22=X: the ordeal of AL.
MAG=33=SWORD: the weapon of analysis.
MAGI=56=ISIS, RULE: the word of Nuit.
MAGIC=69=DANGER, GLADNESS: there is success.
MAGICK=78=NUIT. Magick then is a dangerous art involving the winning of the Ordeal X, or is the nature of the Ordeal X by analysis of Nuit to find the rule of Isis.
Words, phrases, and sentences of the same value pertain to the same root number archetype. UNIVERSE=131=SUPREME, and SERPENT, and O PROPHET. The Universe is supreme; and it has always been symbolised as a serpent; and what else could be the ultimate prophet of O or Nothing, but everything, which is the Universe. 131 in the Greek Qaballa is the value of PAN, a word which is used in English as a prefix meaning 'all'.
‘Counting well’ was derived from the injunction in AL III:19 to ‘‘count well its name, & it shall be to you as 718,’’ i.e., the stele of revealing. Verses of the same number may be considered as containing parallel ideas or pertaining to the same archetypal symbols. AL I:19 begins with the words ‘‘O azure-lidded woman,’’ and in II:19 we find ‘‘the highest are of us.’’ Wherever one is, the sky or space is the highest phenomenon. The sky is the azure-lidded one bending down upon us as shown on the Stele. And indeed we find that AZURE LIDDED counted well, (63x6)+(68x5) = 718. With the number 718 we are at variance with Aleister Crowley on logical grounds. Those who would dispute this may turn to the expanded commentary on this verse for a treatise of mind-blowing contortions and fiddling. The phrase ‘‘azure-lidded’’ interested Crowley in that it has the initials A.L. and has eleven letters. He suspected that it had a deeper meaning, but although he tried for many years, off and on, he never succeeded in elucidating it. ‘‘Azure-Lidded Woman’’ has the initials A.L.W. with the numerical values 1,2,3. In the English Qaballa, the phrase I AM NUIT adds up to 123 as does REVEALING, and THREEFOLD. This is dramatic proof that the azure-lidded one is indeed the Goddess of infinite space - proof of the certainty of Nuit. The puzzle of the key number 718 is an example of how the numerical values link with the text to give blinding insights into the nature of Man and the Universe. Proof gives certainty.
The initials of words that form a series such as a sentence reveal the first phase of the essential nature of the statement. The last letters of the same words similarly reveal the final phase. They give the empirical meaning of the words. For example, the phrase ‘‘Then said the prophet unto the God’’ (AL III:36) has a total value of 418. This number resonates throughout the Book; here a brief explanation will suffice: 41 is the value of WHOLE, and 8 signifies Infinity, therefore 418 may be said to symbolise the Whole of Infinity. The Universe is the first manifestation of that infinite wholeness; so it is hardly surprising that the initials of the phrase, TSTPUTG=131=UNIVERSE. The sum of the last letters is 107 which is the value of MATTER, the ultimate crystallization of the whole of Infinity.
An insight into the interplay between archetypes may be gained by subtracting the value of one from that of another.
NUIT=78 without HAD=11 is 67, the value of FLAME. Nuit is FIRE (=78); this means that Had is that which is burned by the flame to give the fire of Nuit. The difference between MAN=36 and GOD=24 is 12: Man has within him the twelve signs of the Zodiac, and God does not, having transcended the Zodiac. This is an alternative way of analysing this subtraction of one value from another.
78, the value of Nuit the Great Goddess, reversed is 87, the value of EIGHT, and GREEN, and MONTHLY. The Goddess gives the greenness of nature; this implies that the complementary colour red is attributable to Her. ‘‘The Five Pointed Star with a Circle in the Middle, & the circle is Red.’’ (AL I:60). MONTHLY suggests the menstrual flux, a concept further underlined by the representation of the Goddess on Earth that is the Scarlet Woman. The reward of THE STAR (=95) is 59, the value of YONI and WHEEL. The symbol of THE STAR is found in all three sections of the Complete Tree of Life, pouring the blessings from the Top of the Tree onto the roots. The reward She gives to her worshippers is the Wheel of Life in its true meaning. There is a great mystery in this, which is beyond the scope of the present work, because it contains a very powerful magickal formula. The reward of 93 is 39 = MARS and AUM, the source of all energy in creation, and YOU, for you are also the bearer of all the energy in creation on a microcosmic scale. In the lower worlds Mars tends towards destruction, as indeed does Scorpio (=93). It is unwise to begin anything when the Moon is in the House of Death, for it will destroy the event; however, magickal work, particularly with Liber AL, can be unusually productive at this time, due to a link through the planes caused by Tahuti (=93).
The word of a deity is its value + 34. The word of Love is 44+34=78=NUIT the Goddess of the Stars, who is divided for love’s sake. 78 is also the value of FIRE, cognate with the active principle or force of Love. The word is what the entity will teach you. The reward is what it will give you. Words having a double-digit value are their own reward i.e. LOVE=44, CIRCLE and ECSTASY add to 88. Crowley said that Abrahadabra was the word of the Aeon - he was wrong. Abrahadabra (=79) is the word of Horus (=45). 79-34=45. Incidentally we recommend caution when uttering the word Abrahadabra except during the Supreme Ritual: it is a Word of Ending (=93) and tends to provoke destructive results.
The word LAW adds to 6 therefore any number ending in a 6 is the law of the preceding number i.e. 16 is the law of woman (1=ONE=46=WOMAN). 16=WAR which is a state of division that she provokes, for the sake of unity. When the number 6 is preceded by another number this represents the law in action, i.e. 61 is the law of unity in action; in Hebrew this is the value of Nothing
,Numbers ending in 8 represent archetypal concepts in that they are the ground rules of one Infinity. We will illustrate this with reference to the spheres on the Hebrew Tree of Life and thereby demonstrate the way in which the E.Q. illuminates the old traditions of Western occultism.
18 (Kether) = GO. The mundane Chakra of Kether is named Rashith ha Gilgalim, the Primum Mobile. As Crowley said, one’s only function is to go.
28 (Chokmah) = WORD, IS. In the beginning was the Word, to quote an old Aeon script.
38 (Binah) = JOY. This proves that the Vision of Sorrow of Binah is truly a mask for the Vision of Joy.
48 (Chesed) = DOVE, GOODLY. The DOVE was sent out from the Ark in search of land or order - Chesed. GOODLY means conforming to the Chesedic plan.
58 (Geburah) = HADIT, ORDEALS. 5 is the root number of Hadit, the dynamic element; the fifth Sephirah has the qualities of Justice and Severity, correcting all Karma by experiences which are seen as ORDEALS.
68 (Tiphareth) = CHANGE, PALACE. The sixth sphere is the pivot of the Tree of Life. It is the sphere of the old Aeon God, Jesus: it is the first manifestation of Life which provokes CHANGE. Tiphareth is also the PALACE of the King.
78 (Netzach) = NUIT, FIRE. The description of the Goddess NUIT conforms to the Vision of Netzach of a beautiful naked woman. FIRE is the only element to have a positive title in the seventh sphere; its magical weapon is the Lamp, symbol of Venus.
88 (Hod) = INVOKE, MASTER. Hod is the sphere of magic.
98 (Yesod) = DELICACY, MIGHTY. These two words aptly describe the sphere of Illusion which is also the Foundation.
108 (Malkuth) = GARMENT, VISIBLE. The final manifestation in tangible or VISIBLE form, a material GARMENT ensouled with the emanations of all the other Sephiroth through Yesod.
SOME USEFUL NUMBERS
It is valid and useful to work with the values of significant esoteric words which do not appear in Liber AL; the planets and star-signs are of importance, as are the titles of the Tarot cards. The symbolism of Crowley’s Thoth Tarot, painted by Lady Frieda Harris and not published until after his death, is illustrative in every particular of the system revealed by the English Qaballa. Words which appear in the other Class A texts should be referred to with discrimination, since a fair few of seem to be not quite up to Aiwass’ usual style.
