Aleister Crowley
When Aleister Crowley received the Book of the Law via a direct communication from an entity called Aiwass it was thought by the occult world to be nothing more than just another magickal text that applied only to Crowleyanity. Crowley himself however was convinced otherwise, he knew it was something more but he was not to live to find out the vast significance of the words he had received he died in 1945 and AL was not to be understood at all until 1976.
The Book has fascinated many occultists since Crowley, each one interpreting the text using their own pet occult theories. There are many fascinating problems in the text. There are references to secret words and concepts that somehow would give the magician some undisclosed advantage but little indication of what. Also there is an intriguing verse that consists of nothing more than numbers and letters. This has been the bane of every occultist that has looked at it. Try as they might the mystery of this verse has eluded them. Another factor to prove impossible to solve was the mystery of a qaballa said in the text to permeate the Book. It is claimed that there is a qaballa in English with its key concealed within the text. Nobody in their right mind could ever have considered that it was possible for a qaballa to exist in English. There could be no Qaballa in English for many reasons, the most obvious one being that English could not be a heiratic language because it was a developing language and had done so down the centuries and was something of a mish mash of several contributory languages having no mathematical coherence whatsoever. If the Book of the Law had a Qaballa intrinsic to itself it would mean that the English language has had a controlled development down those centuries. This would imply divine intervention throughout its development, this is clearly absurd.
At the time of its reception we lived in a very fragmented world as presented to us by an ever expanding industrial society. Perhaps things have changed somewhat. Since then even Science is coming more and more to accept the integrity of the universe as a viable entity with a finite set of rules. What we must accept if the Qaballa of AL is true is a completely harmonious universe with entities capable of influencing the planet down to the minutest detail. If the Qaballa is true it is only a matter of time before its principles rule the world, because if the Gods in their infinite wisdom have chosen now to prove their existence they wont stop at that, they will inevitably make themselves known, sooner or later. If there is a qaballa in the Book of the Law it will change the nature of the way man looks at the universe and his relation to it. The universe ceases to be an alien phenomenon and becomes our home per se because we have got the divine rule book and that's what the text is saying again and again.
All these ideas seem far fetched and ludicrous and yet in November 1976 these ideas were to become a reality. The events leading up to the reception of E.Q. will have to be the subject of another discourse but suffice to say the reception was the culmination of a retirement of nine months starting February 1976.
